CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
Hospitalist Program Preceptorship
As a nurse practitioner student, I worked with a Nurse Practitioner Hospitalist in a busy hospital in an underserved area of Lynn, Massachusetts.
Completed new admission intakes, inpatient rounding and patient discharges. Assisted in the diagnosis and treatment of various health problems of geriatric patients and provided health education and disease understanding to patients. Assisted in ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests and initiating medication and collaborated with the primary care providers of admitted patients.
School Based Health Center Preceptorship
As a nurse practitioner student, I worked in a high school with high school students addressing their physical, mental, emotional and sexual concerns.
Completed sports physical exams, yearly physical exams and episodic health visits. Provided education, confidentiality (as appropriate), and informal counseling. Made referrals to behavioral health, family planning, and specialty services. Assisted in diagnostic and laboratory testing and the initiation of medication.
Midwifery Preceptorship
At this clinical preceptorship I worked as a nurse practitioner student providing healthcare to pregnant women.
Completed physical exams, vaginal exams and pap smears. Assessed fundal height and fetal heart tones at each visit and provided pregnancy health education. Assessed for early signs of complications and collaborated with health care providers at the facilities where patients would deliver. Completed episodic visits for health concerns guided by the principles of safe practice for assessing, diagnosing, prescribing and evaluating patients who are pregnant.
Women’s Health Preceptorship
At this clinical site, I worked as a student nurse practitioner assessing, diagnosing and treating women with genitourinary, gynecologicial and family planning concerns.
Provided direct care to young adult and adult patients. Completed physical exams, including vaginal exams, pap smears and breast exams. Made appropriate referrals for health issues and collaborated with health care providers within Codman Square and at Boston Medical Center. Ordered necessary diagnostic and laboratory tests to assist in diagnosis. Prescribed for both preliminary and confirmed diagnoses, provided education and designed a treatment and follow-up plan with patients.
Occupational Health Preceptorship
As a nurse practitioner student, I worked with a Nurse Practitioner in an Orthopedic/Occupational Health setting.
Completed physical exams for Department of Transportation licensure, assessed patients for fractures, sprains, strains and back pain. Assessed patients for eye and ear infections, trauma and for foreign bodies occlusion/penetration. Completed paperwork for worker’s compensation. Assisted in vaccinations, narcotic prescription-writing, suturing, education and follow-up. Worked very closely with the Emergency Department, Radiology and Physical Therapy.
Family Practice Preceptorship
At this clinical preceptorship, I acquired the skill of making the most of a patient visit for patients who present with numerous health concerns. Through investigation and discussion with the patient, the most threatening health concern(s) would be prioritized and addressed at that visit. For the other non-threatening concerns, a follow-up plan would be made.
Provided direct care to pediatric, adult and geriatric patients. Obtained accurate health histories and completed full and focused physical examinations. Ordered and interpreted diagnostic tests, laboratory values and initiated medication. Provided education about health promotion and disease prevention and worked with patients to develop individualized treatment and follow-up plans. Became reoriented with the Massachusetts Social Service Network and was able to connect patients with the resources they needed i.e public assistance, safety and security, etc.
